How FSMA Is Impacting Pet Food And Animal Feed

The melamine contamination of pet food in 2007 generated over 14,000 reports in the first four weeks after it was discovered. A salmonella outbreak in South Carolina led to a recall of 30,000 tons of dry dog and cat food after 47 people became sick after handling the contaminated food. Unlike safeguards in place to protect human food, there were no regulations governing most animal foods during those food safety events. Now, under FSMA, the FDA has a rule for preventive controls for food for animals going into effect in late summer 2015. How will this rule affect the industry?
