Specialized Ready-To-Use Food Manufacturer Installs X-Ray Inspection Systems For Quality Assurance Of Products

Source: Eagle Product Inspection

Edesia is a unique non-profit organization and social enterprise that manufactures specialized ready-to-use foods (RUFs). In 2018, they installed Eagle’s advanced Pack 550 PRO x-ray system to inspect their “miracle solution” Plumpy’Nut®, which along with their other RUFs, is expected to reach over 2 million malnourished children this year.

Plumpy’Nut®, the RUF designed to treat the most severe cases of acute malnutrition, is comprised of ground peanuts, powdered milk, whey, powder sugar, vegetable oils, vitamins and minerals – all designed to provide the nutrition and energy starving children need to get better. The paste is filled into foil pouches called sachets. This ready-to-use therapeutic food is fortified, nutrient-dense and high-energy. It is eaten directly from the package and does not require refrigeration, cooking, or the addition of water. This is especially useful in drought-prone areas of the world. Each serving is the equivalent to a glass of milk and a multivitamin, and the sachets have a shelf life of two years.

When Edesia first opened its factory, the company used inline magnets in their processing line to find contaminants. When they realized they needed a better inspection system, metal detection wasn’t the answer because of the foil pouches used in the packaging process. So Edesia decided to incorporate x-ray into their production line.

Read how after an exhaustive search, the company discovered Plant Automation Group in Brookfield, Connecticut, one of Eagle Product Inspection’s US partners. Extensive testing was performed on Edesia’s products, and Eagle beat out its competitors because of their superior detection of stainless steel.
