For many people worldwide, animal companions are considered part of the family. A surge of "pandemic pups" and other family pets was witnessed across all demographics in recent years. Increasingly, pet owners are enhancing the diets of their pets by incorporating higher-quality ingredients and formulations. Accordingly, an array of raw material and manufacturing processes has emerged, resulting in a myriad of ways foreign object contaminants and quality issues can impact pet foods and treats. Here, we provide an overview of the inspection challenges for a wide range of pet foods and package types as well as technology considerations for critical control points.
