On-Site Chlorine Generator Enhances BOC Gases' Food Safety Product Line
BOC Gases has been named the marketer of Los Alamos Technical Associates' MIOX on-site chlorine generator, the second product in BOC Gases' food product safety line. The generator produces an effective form of chlorine used for water disinfection and can be used with BOC Gases' Macron Loop System to disinfect water in the immersion chiller bath.(See Food Online's "BOC Gases Showcases Ozone Disinfection System at 1998 International Poultry Exposition") MIOX can also work on eviscerators, scalders and other places where chlorine is used in the plant.
As part of the SafeQuest food safety line, MIOX will initially be marketed to the poultry processing industry. Either as a standalone unit or working with the Macron Loop system, the generator can treat up to 6 million gallons of water at 1ppm dose and produce the equivalent of 50 lbs. of free available chlorine. The technology is available in two models; the Industrial-80 (I-80) and the MIOX 500.
The generator produces an aqueous chlorine in the form of hypochlorous acid by utilizing a dilute brine solution and passing it through an electrolytic cell.
Hypochlorous acid is a 50 to 500 times more effective disinfectant than traditional chlorine. The electrolytic cell requires very low power and the technology allows for a careful matching of product line with customer requirements and preferences. Standalone units can be located on-site anywhere and can be tailored to meet customer needs with respect to the amount of disinfection required. The USDA-approved generators are easy to operate, self-diagnosing, and can automatically adjust to operating conditions, eliminating the need to mix chemicals and scrape off chemical corrosion.
