Streamlined oil seed extraction by extrusion

Clextral has introduced a method of using twin screw extrusion to extract the oil of a variety of grains, including rapeseed (canola), sunflower seeds, castor beans and flax seeds. Clextral's process offers a significant advantage over traditional techniques, which require transfer of each product batch from cooking to processing to pressing - extraction by extrusion is completed inside the extruder barrel and production parameters are computer controlled, for the highest degree of automation and sanitation. The critical process control offered in the extruder gives processors the ability to vary the process parameters (temperature, shear, etc.) during extraction, giving added flexibility to create oils with specific functional properties.

New! Solvent-free oil extraction

This process extracts up to 92% of the oil from the source grain without using hexane or other chemical solvents typically used to heighten oil release. This may be attractive to processors who wish to offer all-natural, non-genetically modified (GMO) oils. Generally, it is not possible to process GMO and non-GMO products from the same equipment due to the risk of cross-contamination. The addition of a Clextral system will allow processors to produce solvent free oil from non-GMO seeds, for oil that is naturally processed, non-GMO and solvent-free. The continuous system requires a smaller initial investment and reduced floor space allowance, making this technique attractive for even small to mid-sized oil seed growers.
