Aiming to refresh its image by using effective, efficient packaging, a fruit producer looked to a packaging manufacturer to engineer a multi-layer jar to meet its specific needs

In order to extend shelf life and increase product appeal, a fruit producer has endeavored to place its products into multi-layered jars. The company specializes in forest-grown fruits and wild mushrooms, and is using multi-layer jars to create a refreshed look.

The producer believed that it needed of a new, updated look for its products, but was concerned about losing touch with its unique history. As with many producers, it was important that the new packaging altered and improved certain aspects, while preserving the elements that provide a distinct brand identity. In order to achieve these goals, the fruit producer worked alongside a packaging manufacturer to select jars for some of its fruit varieties, including raspberries, blueberries, black currants, blackberries, cranberries, red currants, red fruits, and cherries.

The jars feature Polypropylene/Ethylene Vinyl Alcohol/ Polypropylene (PP/EVOH/PP) multi-layer construction, providing improved protection against oxygen permeation. Not only do the jars preserve flavor, aroma, and textural qualities, the new packaging extends ambient shelf life to up to 18 months.

Of course, the construction of the packaging was not the only factor taken into careful consideration. The updated label design was engineered to showcase the product by giving consumers a clear view inside the transparent jars. In many cases, the appearance of a product’s packaging is just as, if not more, important as the packaging’s construction. If the product is unable to catch the eye of consumers, it has little chance of saying competitive.

Clear packaging helps visual inspection, improves safety

Lastly, aside from construction and appearance, the packaging engineers wanted to ensure consumer-friendly functionality. With changing consumer preferences in mind, each jar has a wide mouth to allow for pouring and spooning. Additionally, the lightweight design increases convenience and lowers transportation costs.
