Snacking powerhouse is on target to meet its global Call For Well-Being

On September 9, Mondelez International issued its first report highlighting the company's progress against its global well-being goals.  The report details important steps the company is taking to meet key well-being metrics in the areas of mindful snacking, sustainability, communities, and safety.

The Call For Well-being brings together employees, partners, and suppliers to coordinate actions in the four key areas supporting its global strategy to protect the well-being of the planet.  Since the company's launch in October 2012, Mondelez has advanced its well-being efforts by: providing mindful-snacking options for consumers, securing a sustainable agriculture supply, reducing its overall-environmental footprint, partnering with communities to promote healthy lifestyles, and ensuring the safety of both is workers and consumers. Here is how the company is fairing in its progress toward achieving its Well-being goals:

Mindful Snacking

  • The company is on target to increase individually-wrapped, portion-control options 25 percent by 2020.  Since 2012, Mindful Portion products have grown by 7 percent.
  • Mondelez and its international partners are bringing nutrition education, active play, and fresh foods programs to more than one million children and their families in Australia, Brazil, China, India, and Russia.  The initiative is designed to empower communities by addressing the needs of more than 30 million overweight children around the world, with a focus on those in developing countries.

Sustainability

  • Mondelez International is on target to reach sustainability goals in sourcing key commodities. In 2013, 10 percent of cocoa, 56 percent of coffee, and 44 percent of West European biscuits were sustainably sourced.  Also, the company established third-party verification for the Cocoa Life program that will measure its impact on farmers and their communities.
  • The company achieved its goal of 100 percent of palm oil RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil), two years ahead of its 2015 commitment.
  • It is on target to reach global goals in reducing greenhouse gases (GHG) and water use in manufacturing by 2015.  In 2013, water usage was reduced by 11 percent and GHG emissions by 9 percent.
  • More improvement is needed to reach its goal of a 15 percent reduction in energy use for manufacturing by 2015.  Through 2013, energy usage was reduced by 6 percent.
  • The company exceeded its goal to reduce manufacturing waste by 15 percent by 2015. It had a 46 percent reduction through 2013.

Communities

  • Mondelez is on target to meet its goal of investing $50 million in lifestyle-community partnerships.  In 2013, $25 million was allocated to programs covering 10 countries.

Safety

  • It is on target to achieve FSSC 22000 (Food System Safety Certification) for all internal manufacturing facilities by 2015.  By end of 2013, 75 percent of manufacturing sites were FSSC 22000-certified.
