Lighting Technology For Food Processing Applications

Houston, TX - Industrial Information Resources Incorporated will feature special guest Guth Lighting Incorporated on Industrialinfo.com Radio August 8, 2005 as part of Industry Today, a weekly Internet radio broadcast. Guth Lighting has sponsored this special segment of Industry Today to review and explain the important lighting requirements and guidelines related to the food and beverage industry.

Well-distributed, good quality lighting is a requirement throughout all food processing facilities as mandated by both the USDA and FDA. The intensity of illumination in workrooms should be no less than 30-foot candles and locations where inspection or grading takes place a minimum of 150-foot candles is required. Maintaining the proper level of lighting can avoid costly downtime due to non-compliance. Because sanitation is such a critical part of the food processing industry, a great deal of time and energy is spent washing and sanitizing all processing equipment and the rooms containing this equipment. The machinery, equipment, floors, walls, ceiling, and the lighting fixtures must be capable of performing in a wet and damp environment.

High-pressure wash downs with hot water and/or sanitation chemicals at 1000psi water pressure are not uncommon in food processing work environments. Lighting fixtures must be constructed in such a manner that they do not leak, corrode, or cause fires or electrical problems. Likewise, the lamps must be protected so that should they break, for any reason, glass or other matter would not be dispersed throughout the production area.
