    Summary

    You are what you eat
Another important factor affecting packaged food in 2005 was Britain's newly found focus on health. Food ingredients and labelling became more important than ever. Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver toured the UK's schools, while health-related shows such as Honey, We're Killing the Kids were aired and the government became ever more concerned about the population's obesity. Consequently, the public cannot ignore the damaging effects that processed food can have on health and wellness. According to a new government directive, food manufacturers advertising to children will be placed under more scrutiny than ever. However, health concerns are no longer just about the calories. Salt and hydrogenated fat are to be blamed in equal measure along with the usual suspects such as sugar. As more consumers read product labels, manufacturers increasingly have to adjust their products. The latest example is Tesco's ready meal range, which is supposed to be reformulated until it only contains ingredients that can be found in any average British kitchen.

In addition to worries related to unhealthy ingredients such as fat, there is also a growing concern over chemicals in food. The Sudan-1 scare earlier in the year roused new fears over food ingredients. All of this is leading to a back-to-basics trend, evidenced by organic food, which can already be considered as mainstream.
