Class I Recall Issued For Private Selection Ice Cream

Private Selection Ice Cream Class I Recall

Just as the warmth of spring begins to spread across the U.S., Kroger announces a recall of two Private Selection ice cream flavors, affecting stores in 31 states

Considered a Class I recall, one that can result in serious injury or death, a number of Kroger stores across 31 states will be removing these ice cream products from its shelves. Possibly containing egg, though it is not declared on the label, consumption of these products can cause severe allergic reactions for anyone with sensitivity to eggs. No cases of illness or injury had been reported as of the date of recall, April 26, 2014.

The affected products were distributed into 15 different stores:

Private Selection Hazelnut Mascarpone Ice Cream, 16-ounce package with UPC Code 1111052101 was distributed to:

  • Kroger stores in AL, AR, GA, IL, IN KY, LA, MI, MS, MO, NC, OH, SC, TN, TX, VA, and WV
  • Dillons and Gerbes stores in KS and MO
  • Baker’s stores in NE
  • Fred Meyer stores in AK, ID, OR, and WA
  • Fry’s stores in AZ
  • King Soopers and City Market stores in CO, NM, UT, and WY
  • Owen’s, Pay Less and Scott’s stores in IL and IN
  • Ralphs stores in CA
  • Smith’s stores in AZ, ID, MT, NV, NM and UT
  • QFC stores in OR and WA   

Private Selection Caramel Hazelnut Fudge Truffle Ice Cream, 16-ounce package with UPC Code 1111052100 was distributed to:

  • Kroger stores in AL, AR, GA, IL, IN, KY, MI, MS, MO, NC, OH, SC, TN, VA, and WV
  • Owen’s, Pay Less, Scott’s and Food 4 Less stores in  IL and IN

The dates of distribution are not available, nor are other identifying marks, though a copy of the labels may be seen here. The photos show a “Sell By” date of Oct 10, 15 for both products, though the date is not specified in the FDA recall press release.

Kroger has initiated its customer recall notification system through printed cash register receipt messages and telephone calls. Additionally, Kroger has authorized its stores to provide a full refund or replacement for the product.
