China Stevia Sweetener Industry Witnessed Significant Development And Expected A Boom
More countries and people accepted stevia sweetener application, giving confidence and a great prospect for the whole industry.
Stevia sweetener industry successfully jointed FAO / WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) which confirmed the safety of stevia sweetener containing 95% steviol glycosides in Jun. 2008. This first international certification became a milestone and granted a prosperous future for stevia sweetener industry.
At present, China becomes the largest supplier of stevia sweetener in the world, and it is also the important consumer despite not the NO.1, according to CCM's 2010 edition report Production and market of Stevia Sweetener in China. Its production capacity saw a growth from 5,000 t/a in 2007 to 11,789 t/a in 2009.
In Sept. 2009, Rebaudioside A, one constitute of stevia sweetener, was initially approved to be used in foods and beverages in France, which opened sesame for stevia market and gave confidence to stevia players to develop EU market. Furthermore, global sweetener environment develops and consumers gradually shift to healthy products. Natural and calorie-free sweeteners including stevia sweetener have become more and more popular. The application of Stevia will be broaden and deepen in food and beverage industries as they are the most important downstream industries of stevia sweetener in China.
