Long Beach Township is the largest town on Long Beach Island, New Jersey. With 18 miles of beaches, the town is a major tourist destination. Population exploded during the summer months from approximately 3,000 to over 100,000. This can be a challenge for the town's drinking water facilities, with demand increasing exponentially during the tourist season.
Long Beach Township owns four water treatment plants [WTPs] with capacities ranging from 1.4 to 2.8 MGD. The smallest plant process consists of wells and chlorination facilities. The other three plant processes include wells, iron removal using aeration, settling, prechlorination for oxidation, pH adjustment, pressure filtration, and post-chlorination for disinfection.
