Oscar Mayer Wiener Recall Class I

Nearly 50 tons of hot dogs are on recall due to a mix-up in labeling. Packages of Oscar Mayer Classic Wieners may contain Classic Cheese Dogs; therefore, undeclared allergens

Approximately 96,000 pounds of Oscar Mayer hot dogs have been recalled by Kraft. Produced on March 2 and March 3, 2014, the mislabeled packages will bear the establishment number, “Est. 537H” inside the USDA inspection mark. Allocated to Kraft Foods’ distribution centers and to retail stores across the nation, the following products are being recalled:

Classic Wieners Made with Turkey & Chicken, Pork Added — 16-ounce consumer packages with “USE BY 16 Jun 2014” and bearing the product code: “044700000632”

Classic Cheese Dogs Made with Turkey & Chicken, Pork Added — cases of 16-ounce packages (distributed to retailers) with “USE BY 16 Jun 2014” and bearing the case code: “00447000005300”

According to Kraft Foods, packages labeled Classic Wieners may instead contain Classic Cheese Dogs. As a result, the label does not identify milk, an ingredient in the pasteurized cheese used to make the hot dogs, and a known allergen.

Here are seven tips that can help your company in the event of a recall

The mislabeling was reported to Kraft Foods by a consumer on April 18 and the company notified the USDA the next day. Kraft Foods and the Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) have not received any reports of illness or injury to date. However, a Class I Recall is issued when there is a reasonable probability the use of the product will cause “serious, adverse health consequences or death.”

The USDA has published a distribution list for retail consignees that may or may not be complete. All consumers and retailers are cautioned to check the product-specific labels and identification information above to ensure all affected product is pulled from the shelves. Consumers with questions should contact Kraft Consumer Relations at (855) 688-4386. Retailers should contact their Kraft sales representative or supplier, or may also call (855) 688-4386.
