FDA Expands Class I Recall Of Salmonella-Tainted Egg Products

By Laurel Maloy, contributing writer, Food Online

FDA Recall of Salmonella-Tainted Egg Products

Recall recently expanded to include an additional 82,884 pounds of dried egg products

Nutriom and the FDA have issued a recall for more than 309 thousand pounds of dried egg products distributed in bulk and individual-sized packaging to hundreds of retailers in 46 states. From a somewhat obscure provider of dried egg products, this recall has a far-reaching — and, as yet, incomplete — list of retailers in receipt of product potentially contaminated with Salmonella. Topping the list of retailers with nationwide distribution is Amazon.com.

In addition, 27 Farm & Home stores in Michigan are included in the recall, as are smaller local retail establishments in 46 states — not listed are retailers only in Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, and Rhode Island.

The Class I recall, first announced on Feb. 15, 2014, includes 226,710 pounds of processed egg product, but has recently been expanded by the FDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), to include an additional 82,884 pounds. A Class I recall states “there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to an adulterated product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.” On March 26, the FSIS issued a public health alert when Nutriom declined to expand the existing recall; the agency then expanded the recall on Apr. 14.

Produced between Feb. 28, 2013 and Feb. 8, 2014, the products affected by the recall bear the establishment number: “INSPECTED EGG PRODUCTS PLANT 21493G” within the USDA Mark of Inspection. These products were shipped across the nation to sporting goods and camping retailers, as well as to military installations in the U.S. and abroad.

The products affected, some of which were shipped in bulk for redistribution, and some of which were shipped in consumer-sized packages are:
