Physical foreign body contamination within food products is a common problem for all food manufacturers. When reviewing the food chain, from field to fork, many opportunities exist for the introduction of metal, glass, stone, bones, plastic and rubber contaminants throughout the process. Stones are introduced from the farmer's field during harvesting. Glass bottles are discarded into farm fields, picked up by combines and shattered into the raw ingredients. Hypodermic needles are broken and left within the pigs and cattle shoulders when vaccinated at the hog farms or cattle ranches. Small minute but dangerous pieces of metal from processing equipment that is unmaintained can be processed into the ingredients. Poultry bones are not effectively removed during the slaughter and inspection process eventually leading to a choking hazard at the consumer level. Metal contamination within food products is a common problem for all food manufacturers. Checkweighers assure compliance with label weight regulations, eliminate customer complaints from low-weight packaging or missing items and reduce waste from over-weight packages.
