Plum Organics Recalls Baby Food

Voluntary baby food recall affects two of the company’s products for babies six months and older

Plum Organics has voluntarily recalled approximately 12,000 cases distributed to retailers nationwide. Intermittent damage to the packages’ plastic spouts may have occurred during manufacturing. This manufacturing defect presents a choking hazard for infants.

This recall follows right on the heels of a voluntary recall on Nov 8, 2013. A manufacturing defect, affecting its Baby Stage 2, Tots Mish Mash and Kids lines, was thought to contribute to spoilage of the product.

These baby food pouches can be fitted with a specially designed spoon, though some babies are given the pouch to suck the food from. The small plastic fragment can possibly become detached, the cause for concern about a choking hazard. No injuries have been reported as of this date, though 14 consumer complaints were received about the damaged spouts. Upon receiving complaints, the company discovered manufacturing damage to the rim of the spout. The most noticeable defect is a depression in the rim, though some also have a loose, small fragment of plastic attached to the damaged area.
