Mettler-Toledo Launches Short Version Of X33 Series

To enable food manufacturers with limited factory floor space to comply with food safety standards and reduce energy consumption, the X33 series from Mettler-Toledo Safeline X-ray is now available in two lengths 1,800mm and 800mm.Both x-ray systems feature the revolutionary energy-saving x-ray generator developed by Mettler-Toledo Safeline X-ray in 2012, which offers the same exceptional level of foreign body detection as standard systems while using only a fifth of the power. Designed in collaboration with customers, the system’s new small footprint option simplifies installation on existing production lines.

Much of the footprint of the X33 series’ 1,800mm system consists of the guards covering the in- and out-feed conveyors, which are designed to protect operatives from the x-rays generated and ensure automatic compliance with safety legislation, such as the European Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. This enables manufacturers, such as UK-based Pukka Pies Limited, to benefit from sensitive foreign body detection from the moment the machine is installed.

“We were looking for product inspection technology to uphold the quality of our PUKKA-PIES brand while supporting our commitment to sustainability and reducing carbon emissions,” said Peter Gull, Project Manager, Pukka Pies Limited. “By providing us with the 1800mm option of the X33 series, Mettler-Toledo Safeline X-ray not only helped to reduce our carbon footprint, but enabled us to lower our manufacturing costs”.

In response to demand from food manufacturers with limited factory floor space, Mettler-Toledo Safeline X-ray developed the X33 series’ 800mm without pre-installed guards, minimising the machine’s footprint during integration. After installation, guards can be easily constructed around the detector apertures and over existing conveyors without increasing the system’s size.

“Many food manufacturers are concerned that they do not have the space to install a standard-size x-ray inspection system,” explained Daniela Verhaeg, Marketing Manager SBU X-ray Inspection, Mettler-Toledo. “To enable companies to comply with rigorous food safety standards, such as the International Featured Standards (IFS), we are committed to extending access to the latest technology to every manufacturer”.

The X33 series features a 20 Watt x-ray generator rather than the 100 Watt generator used in traditional x-ray systems. Under typical operating conditions, the X33 series consumes 20 per cent less energy, reducing production costs. Capable of inspecting packaged food and pharmaceutical products for foreign bodies, such as glass and metal fragments, calcified bone, mineral stone and high-density plastic, the machine also simultaneously performs gross mass measurement of packaged products. This allows manufacturers greater portion control, minimising wasteful product giveaway and enhancing efficiency.

An easy-to-use Ethernet-enabled touchscreen display on the X33 series simplifies product set up and changeover for machine operatives with minimal training. The inclusion of gas-strut assisted lids and doors allows easy access to the x-ray cabinet for essential maintenance, reducing downtime and costs.
