In Part Two of FSMA Fridays: Supply Chain, Environmental Monitoring, And Distribution Centers For The Preventive Controls For Human And Animal Food Rules, The Acheson Group’s David Acheson and Melanie Neumann joined SafetyChain’s VP of Marketing and Communications, Jill Bender continued the conversation about FSMA’s Preventive Controls For Human And Animal Food Rules by addressing new requirements for recordkeeping, as well as the best approach to environmental controls under the new rules. Here, in the third, and final, portion of the series, the group will address the issue of water, ice, and scrap materials under FSMA’s Preventive Controls For Human And Animal Food Rule and will begin handling questions from the webinar’s live audience.
Jill: Moving on to the last of our pre-submitted questions, this is something that came up a few times. I’m glad to see this is up here question wise. David, if you could, please offer advice in regard to the animal rules, specifically ice and scrap from my plant for animal feed. What do I need to do to comply with the animal rule?
David: Great question. This comes up a lot and is very relevant to a lot of companies that make human foods. I think the short answer to this is “No, you don’t need to fully comply, but you do need to comply with a few elements.” The fundamental principle the FDA has put out there is that if assuming your human food production plants are compliant with the preventive control rule and meeting all applicable cGMP requirements, that pretty much is what you will need to do.
