PACK EXPO 2014 took place at Chicago’s McCormick Place November 2 – November 5. Food Online’s Editor Sam Lewis attended the event and had the opportunity to speak with several of the event’s attendees and exhibitors.

Lewis spoke with the show’s representatives, exhibitors, and presenters about a wide range of topics: from the latest solutions in food-packaging and food-processing technology, to how product-inspection and traceability technologies are evolving alongside federal and global food-safety regulations.

Here, Lewis visited the Viking Masek booth and had the opportunity to speak with Joe Hattrup, President of FASTechnology Group. At the Viking Masek booth, Hattrup describes the impact that serialization in packaging is having on the food and beverage industry. Hattrup continues by explaining serialization solutions are providing supply-chain transparency, accountability, product recall management, and bringing traceability down to the level of the individual package. Hattrup also explains that serialization technology not only holds benefits for food and beverage manufacturers, but also for consumers. He details the advantages, such as recall notifications, offers and promotions driven by expiration dates, shopper engagement and cross-merchandising features, that consumers may see from this technology. Finally, Hattrup offers his opinion on the current and future state of packaging serialization, saying that this technology offers numerous benefits and will continue to offer more as it becomes more widespread. He also notes that this technology is able to be affordably implemented now.
