The conference will analyse and discuss the European Commission proposal (COM(2008)40) on the provision of food information to consumers which was amended by the European Parliament in first reading in June 2010. The Commission proposal aims to simplify the structure of horizontal food labelling legislation and would combine the two main existing pieces of legislation regarding the labelling of foodstuffs. The conference will also debate other EU legislation aimed at improving information to consumers and imposing nutritional requirements such as: -Initiatives from the EU in the field of cloning, GMO and novel foods - Regulation 1924/2006 on nutrition and health claims made in food; - Infringements of the food labelling requirements, responsibilities and remedies - EU legislation aiming at giving information on the origin of food products, and case law related to geographical indications and trademarks - Labelling of organic products
