Get A Handle On Labeling
By John Henry, www.changeover.com
In my last column, I started talking about pressure sensitive (PS) labeling. I felt that I needed to say a few words about the labels and wound up spending the entire column on some of the issues to look out for with the labels. We also can't talk about labeling without talking about product handling, so that is this column. I promise, in my next column I will talk about the actual labelers and getting the label onto the product.
PS labelers, properly set up, are usually pretty consistent. I've seen people spend a lot of time trying to fix a labeler problem when it was actually a product handling problem. The label was dispensed in the right position, but the product was not in the right position. If either is not right, the final result will be wrong.
Most people realize that axial orientation of oval bottles is critical to proper front and back label position. If the bottle is slightly twisted, one of the labels will be too close to the leading edge of the bottle and the other too close to the trailing edge. Trying to adjust the labeler will not correct the problem. All it will do is frustrate the technician and waste their time.
