Eriez® PolyMag® Additives Provide Strong Defense Against Plastic Contamination and Help Processors Meet New FSMA and HARPC Standards

Erie, PA — As processors throughout the United States implement additional safeguards to comply with new standards set forth by the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventive Controls (HARPC), Eriez® is experiencing increased demand for PolyMag® additives. The FDA-compliant additives impart metal detectability, x-ray contrast and magnetic susceptibility when added to plastic moldings. Incorporating these additives can prevent plastic contaminated food products from reaching the consumer.

Eriez provides PolyMag additives in a non-dusting pellet, allowing molders and extruders to produce metal detectable and x-ray visible plastic items used for food contact applications, such as pallets. “One of the core components of FSMA involves increased hygiene during shipping,” explains John Collins, Eriez PolyMag Business Manager. “To meet these requirements, many companies are eliminating wood pallets and upgrading to more hygienic plastic pallets that are manufactured with PolyMag additives.” He adds, “These additives are also used in a variety of other applications to meet preventive control requirements included in new government standards.”

PolyMag additives are typically included at 10 to 20 percent loadings in moldings and extrusions. In addition to pallets, the additives are an ideal choice for conveyor belts, ear plugs, elevator buckets, gaskets, totes, pens, markers, scoops, shovels, scraper blades, sifter cleaning balls and sliders, tags, labels and more.

Resins containing the PolyMag Gray HSCP can be pigmented as darker colors such as blue, gray, green, red and purple. PolyMag Beige XRD is preferred for applications that require a high level of x-ray contrast. Molders can include both the PolyMag HSCP and XRD masterbatch additives to impart metal detectability and x-ray contrast in plastic parts.

Eriez experts can also work with customers to create custom molding compounds. As a leading manufacturer of metal detector systems, Eriez offers assistance in determining the level of detectability and x-ray contrast required by different food processing applications. Using samples customers provide, the Eriez team has the ability to supply an analysis of a product’s inspection signature.
