Balluff, Inc.magnetostrictive linear position sensors are now available with a Profibus-DP interface, a widely used fieldbus standard for networking peripheral equipment in general automation applications, such as packaging machinery, assembly, and similar applications.

With a stroke length of up to 4 m (157"), the profile-style Balluff, Inc.units provide sub-millisecond position updates, position resolution of 5 microns (0.0002"), and velocity resolution of 0.1mm/sec (0.004"/sec). Automatic baud rate detection ensures trouble-free start up in Profibus systems with speeds of 9.6 kbps and 12 Mbps.

The new Profibus units are CE-approved, shock-rated to 100g/6ms and sealed to IP67 requirements – immune to contamination from dust, chips, dirt and oil, as well as outdoor environments. Non-contact, wear-free design ensures peak accuracy over the entire life of the unit, while absolute position sensing eliminates the need to re-home after a power outage. Balluff, Inc.sensors operate on 24VDC, protected against reverse polarity, with ±15VDC operation available as an option. All standard analog and digital outputs are available in the product family.

The exclusive, patented auto-tuning electronics reduce maintenance and repair costs, because fewer parts need to be replaced, and less disassembly is required. Auto tuning also compensates for any performance changes caused by temperature fluctuations, allowing the Balluff, Inc.to provide consistent, stable accuracy over a wide operating temperature range of -40 to +185°F. Higher temperature ratings are available.
