In Part One of FSMA Fridays: Supply Chain Controls — How Preventive Controls for Human Food And FSVP Fit Together, SafetyChain’s Jill Bender was joined by The Acheson Group’s Dr. David Acheson and Rolando Gonzalez to discuss FSMA’s Preventive Controls for Human Food rule and how it meshes with the Foreign Supplier Verification Program (FSVP). Here, in Part Two of the series, the trio will address how FSMA evolved with regard to supply chain regulatory requirements.
Jill: Looking through our attendee list — and this often happens during FSMA Fridays — the mix of attendees today is really from produce, manufacturing, distribution, and retail. I see just a really big mix throughout the supply chain, so your response and insight on this question, I know, really was relevant to the audience. Thank you.
Moving on to our next question, and David, I’ll go ahead and put this one over to you. How did FSMA evolve with regard to supply chain regulatory requirements?
David: Well, I think we have to keep in mind what it is in today’s environment, and this is building off of what Rolando’s just talked about. As a food company, wherever you are in the supply chain — whether you are on a farm, a manufacturer, a distributor or food service, retail, one of the most frequent calls... and maybe the most frequent call, other than labeling issues with allergens – is when you get a phone call from one of your suppliers, saying, “We’ve just realized we’ve shipped you something that’s causing a problem.”
