By Endress Hauser, Inc.

It is no secret that energy prices are increasing. We feel it every time we fuel out cars or open the envelope with our monthly gas bill. The difference with energy versus other purchases and expenses we incur is that we need energy. Overwhelmingly however, we are finding ways to reduce our use and changing our habits to improve efficiency or simply reduce our use and therefore, offset the impact on our wallets.

In industry, the general theme is not that different. What is different however, is the overall cost, quantity, and regulation that surrounds the use and production of energy. More and more, companies are becoming interested in energy measurement, management, and reduction. After all, without energy, a company has no finished product to manufacture, deliver, warehouse, or more important, sell to generate a profit. Industrial energy use is increasingly being viewed as a variable operating cost rather than a fixed overhead. In order to make energy a manageable cost that could be reduced or improved however, it must be measured. There is no quantifiable or realized improvement without knowing where the short, mid, and long term savings are and how much they can impact a company's bottom line.
